Medication Safety: Getting the Most From Your Prescriptions

Medicines are among the most powerful tools in modern healthcare. Used correctly, they treat infections, control long-term conditions and relieve symptoms. Used incorrectly, they may not work as intended or can even cause harm. Understanding how to take your medicines safely helps you get the most from every prescription.

Whether you take a short course of antibiotics or several medicines every day, a few practical habits make a real difference.

Understand each medicine

Before starting any new medicine, make sure you know what it is for, how much to take, when to take it and for how long. Ask whether it should be taken with food, and whether there are foods, drinks or other medicines to avoid. Your doctor and pharmacist are always happy to explain.

Knowing why, when and how to take a medicine is the foundation of safe treatment.

Keep an accurate list

Maintain an up-to-date list of every medicine you take, including over-the-counter products, vitamins and herbal supplements. Share it at every appointment so your healthcare team can check for interactions and avoid duplication.

Complete courses as prescribed

Some medicines, such as antibiotics, need to be taken for the full prescribed course even if you start to feel better. Stopping early can allow an infection to return. Never stop, skip or change a prescribed medicine without speaking to your doctor first.

Expert tip: Use a weekly pill organiser and phone reminders to stay on schedule, and request repeat prescriptions before you run out.

Watch for side effects

Most side effects are mild and settle quickly, but some need attention. Read the information leaflet, know which symptoms to look out for and contact your healthcare provider if something concerns you. Seek urgent help for signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Be careful with alcohol and over-the-counter remedies while taking prescribed medicines. Some combinations can increase side effects or reduce effectiveness, so check with your pharmacist before adding anything new.

Store medicines safely

Keep medicines in their original packaging, in a cool, dry place out of reach of children. Check expiry dates regularly and return unused medicines to a pharmacy for safe disposal.

Regular medication reviews help ensure every medicine you take is still needed and working well together. If you take several medicines, ask for a review at least whenever your health changes.
